the Place Where the Water Meets the Sky
This place calls me
the place where the water meets the sky
where ancient voices call in the waves
in ancestral harmony
their stories written in the foam
their labors traded upon the tumult
their cries thundering and then evaporating upon my skin
the sky cradles and watches over
she hears the tidal voice
grow ever more complex from eon to eon
her clouds cloak her vast darkness
sometimes with playful cotton shapes
other times with brooding towers
only when midnight opens her gown
can her true self be seen
this place calls me
the place where the water meets the sky
where the water touches and reflects
in a dance with the universe
this place where the moods of lovers entangle
and the moods of The Creator inspire
it is in this place I cry my salty tears
they spill and mix with the tears of my ancestors
and my voice adds another layer of harmony
and I am one with all
in the place
where the water meets the sky
Ecstasy
Petrichor and rain-beaten lavender
wafted through my windows all night in the sweetest heady plumes
–fingers sliding through windows, finding me in every room.
Velvety cool breezes caressed my hot skin that thirsted for more.
Thirty second low rumbles of slow rich thunder
whispered it’s seductive conversation in my ears with repeated intoxication.
Dancing cloud-to-cloud lightning shown so brightly
in greens and whites that the night itself was in afterglow.
The rain teased and then battered my world with it’s jingling chimes and throbbing drum beats.
I was breathless until sleep’s sweet demise could wait no more.
Oh ecstasy! You have made love to my senses until I am limp.
The Silver Pond
Into the silver pond I gaze
It’s surface glassy and cool.
I smile and trace my finger there
Across the silken pool.
When I laugh it laughs with me
And gaily do I sing.
Looking down deep it calls to me
This mercurial, wonderous thing.
As I peer into the pond
My reflection is plain to see.
but this image is way more beautiful
Than I could ever be.
I splash and play along the banks
Where the pond and I do meld.
And I know I’ll not e’re fall in
’cause safely I am held.
View From the Sea
The night’s lit up like holiday,
a luminous azure plane
Bedecked with sparkling fireflies
too numerous to tame.
Tiny bits of diamonds
look at me like shining eyes,
Winking shapes of animals
from beyond all distant skies.
If I could connect these dots
to see each starry shape
Come alive in perfect view
my eyes would surely gape.
The secret stories from the past
of flight and fiery birth
Would come to life and dance alive
above this tiny Earth.
The moon a glaring half disc
in a layered rainbow dress
Looks like watermelon dipped
in platinum with heaven’s tress.
She soars above my water world
a beacon in the night
Chanting: I am food for thought,
now wont you take a bite?
the Invitation
Laying half covered
down caressing my chin,
I feel the cool ocean breeze
surround me in hushed tones.
My hand holds my dogs paw.
She snuggles against the part of me
the blanket cannot reach.
We breathe as one.
Waves whisper and invite
just beyond my window
where they lull and soothe
this weary traveler.
Drawn up as if through a straw
I slide out of my exhaustion
onto the wind,
leaving my clothes in a pool on the bed.
Circling and diving I join the gulls
in their white feathered tutus.
We dance over moonlit cliffs.
Lighter than air we perform our midnight ballet
in the spaces where the cresting waves
and the stars touch.
I skid across wet sand leaving crescent shapes
that adorn the beach and disappear into the surf.
My soul is renewed in this place of my ancestry.
Fill my lungs with salt spray
and cover me with the particles worn
from my rocky lineage…
I am home. I am free.
By and By
I will wander my shores to the places you’ve been
As the gulls they gather and cry.
The sun as it rises shall be my best friend
‘Til I see you again by and by.
With all my heart I’ll long for you
Until the end of time.
We’ll dance and laugh ‘neath skies so blue
And share our love in rhyme.
I’ll follow along where the whispering foam
Kisses each trace of your stride
As each icy wave chills my feet to the bone
And erases your steps in the tide.
In the meadow I’ll watch the grasses gold
‘Til they hint at a form that had lain.
I’ll ease gently down where the blades do fold
And the sweetness of you remains.
With all my heart I’ll long for you
Until the end of time.
We’ll dance and laugh ‘neath skies so blue
And share our love in rhyme.
And if I should find a smoldering coal
I will know that it once burned bright.
For I shall feel the peace of your soul
As you sat in firelight.
With all my heart I’ll long for you
Until the end of time.
We’ll dance and laugh ‘neath skies so blue
And share our love in rhyme.
I will wander my shores to the places you’ve been
As the gulls they gather and cry.
The sun as it sets shall be my best friend
‘Til I see you again by and by.
Love in the Mist
Their love crashed over the sea
drenching the lives they lead.
It caught them in it’s tidal pull
taking them out in swirling laughter.
Festooned with the cargo of
coral jewels and salty treasure,
the majesty of love pulled them under.
Like a ship’s contents spilled,
they frolicked in the wealth abounding.
Holding their breath, they could wait no longer
but plunged into the abyss.
Light and dazzling magic filled their eyes and ears
as they passed through the portal in front of them.
Hands clasped, they gazed into each other’s eyes.
Inhaling deeply, with nothing but faith in their hearts,
they drew in a shared breath.
Lungs filled with mystery…
Heads spun with giddey delight….
Their passage made,
they found a palace of joy awaiting them.
Their toes tread gently into this new haven,
never again to know sorrow or tears.
Until the Day We See You Again
I walked by the harbor to see the small boats
They knew I was looking for you.
They sat all alone in water so grey.
I knew they were thinking of you….
I strolled the low tide and kicked at the rocks.
I asked if the shore had seen you.
The waves barely splashed and were brown and dull.
I knew that they longed for you too…
I asked the gulls to sing me the song
That you whistle to me when I’m blue.
They gave me a stare and quietly stood,
And I knew they were lost without you…
A whale burst from the shining sea,
She heard me starting to cry.
Out of the deep she sang along
Her voice was as sad as a sigh.
The pelicans flew in single file
And landed upon the grey swells.
The waves picked up and splashed at my feet
depositing tiny shells.
I walked beside the water’s edge,
beneath the purplish sky.
One by one, men in small boats
Rowed out and gathered nearby.
And from their boats they waved and they called
“We’re here!”, “We’ll wait with you too!”
The pelicans floated much closer to me
And that was the moment I knew.
That all of the Earth and all of the sky…
The waves and the rocks of the sea…
The people and animals gathered around
To keep watch and to wait with me.
I’ll wait for you until you come.
The world will be at my side
Until the day we see you again.
Sail home to us safe in the tide.
Hope’s Lonely Drowning
Waiting…
buoyed against time’s gravity
by your words
“As long as it takes…”
lamplight flickering vigilantly
against night’s fear
Gifts bestowed…
like tiny beads counted
upon rosaries of hope
Kisses shared…
coals of dampened fires
in slumber’s keep
Trust, faith, patience,
sewn like a patches over blind eyes,
lead me to the shore
I stood listening to the voices of angels
their songs delivering me upon wings
my limbs grew numb
I waded into arms that awaited
knowing that my deliverance would come
surely this is my resurrection
Choking down the salty truth
I falter and stumble into the depths
of my own lonely drowning
I see that the one I awaited
has already gone
and I cannot follow
Destiny
silver pool
reflecting
inviting
azure plane
treasures concealed
thirsty canvas
awaiting
her tenderness
one pearl from her mouth
exuded intimately
spoken reverently
diamond droplet
of spirit essence
falling falling
through the expanse
frictionless journey
heavy with honor
bulging
spinning prism of desire
falling falling
at once
their kiss
rainbows of water
splash
wet with longing
she breaks through his surface
and he consumes her
in concentric circles
